Belgian Postcodes & NIS Codes

Postcodes vs. municipalities vs. NIS codes

  • Postcodes (bpost) belong to places. One municipality can have many postcodes (Antwerpen), and a postcode can cover several places, including sub-municipalities (deelgemeenten / sections) that merged in 1977.
  • NIS / REFNIS codes (Statbel) identify the 565 municipalities for statistics and administration: 5 digits, the first ones encoding the province and district (e.g. 41081 Zottegem). They are used in KBO data, tax forms and government APIs.

On 1 January 2025 several Flemish municipalities merged (e.g. Tessenderlo-Ham, Pajottegem, Lokeren + Moerbeke), which changed NIS codes; postcodes did not change. This list uses the 2025 codes. Sources: bpost postcode list and Statbel REFNIS 2025 (CC BY 4.0).
